Ubuntu v6.10 Edgy Eft Released today

In my previous post I mentioned that I was going to try updating my FC5 boxes to FC6.  After reading about some issues using yum to update I decided to put updating to FC6 and instead downloaded and installed Ubuntu v6.10 “Edgy Eft” on a spare pc I had laying around.  Here’s a brief description of how it went.
I downloaded my .iso file from the Finland site and burned it to CD.  While I was downloading and burning the iso I was preparing the patient.  An AMD 1.3 GHz machine with 1 GB of RAM and an 80 GB WD HD and an ATI 7500 64 MB video card.  At 10:20 PM I started installing.  It boots into Live CD mode.  I double clicked “Install”.  Chose “English” and chose “New York” for time zone.  I did have to manually set the time even though the bios time was correct which was a little weird.  I then chose “U.S. English” for the keyboard layout.  Then I was asked to fill in the “Who are you?” information.  After that I was asked to “Prepare the Disk”.  You can choose either “Erase the entire disk” or “Partitioner”, I chose “Erase the entire disk”.  It was now 10:32 PM, a full 12 minutes since I booted to the Live CD.  It took until 10:52 PM to complete the installation and requested a reboot.  At 10:54 PM I was booted back into Ubuntu Edgy Eft the whole installation process took 34 minutes, try that with XP!  Now it is time to play!

JOY! Fedora Core 6 is ready!

This weekend I am going to attempt to upgrade my FC5 boxes to FC6.  Check back for an update!
UPDATE: Well after doing some additonal reading on updating FC5 to FC6 using yum I have decided to put it off for a little while as I continue to educate myself on how to best get to FC6.

Fedora Frog

I’ve been using Fedora Core 5 almost since the day it was released so I don’t know how I missed this one.  I just heard about and installed Fedora Frog.  It’s an app that fetches other cool FC5 apps from alternate repositories.  Very cool.

TCPMP player for PalmOS

I have been shopping for a portable audio player that would play OGG files.  I just about had my mind made up to buy an iRiver but by chance I came across a free player that works on my Palm Zire 31; TCPMP
TCPMP plays all sorts of codecs including MP3, OGG, and MPEG4.

STD and Helix Linux

I’ve been having fun with the live CDs from STD and Helix.  There are tons of really cool security and forensic tools.  Give them a try, you won’t be sorry.

Optical Mouse the works with Belkin KVM

Over the past few months I have tried several different optical mice with my 1GHz  Fedora Core 5 system and a Belkin 2 port KVM with no success.  I found that I could only use a standard ball type mouse.  Today on a whim I tried another mouse, a Logitech MX518.  To my surprise it works perfectly.

What’s your favorite Distro?

One of the topics that gets batted around when ever Linux Geeks get together is “What’s you favorite Distro”?  Right now mine is Fedora Core v5 (FC5).  I like almost everything about it except the speed of updates using yum.  My favorite thing about Fedora Core is that it works with all my hardware.  I am running FC5 on two different machines.  The first is a P4 1.5 GHz with 384 MB RAM and a Celeron 1.0 GHz with 256 MB RAM.  The other distros I have tried are. Slackware v8.1, Debian Sarge, Ubuntu v5.10, and, PCLinuxOS.  Except for Debian Sarge all these distros had trouble detecting all my hardware.  I used Debian Sarge for several months but I got frustrated with it not having the latest apps available.
